If you want a portable speaker system with just great sound and simple design, try Logitech Audiostation Express iPod Speaker. This portable audio system work with either battery (6 AA) or using the AC adaptor, so this stuff was great for your trip.
Unfortunately there are in EQ setting on the speakers themselves, but, using the EQ on iPod you will found it much better. Otherwise, these portable audio systems have a great clarity and you will get no distortion at high levels, that’s great.
With light and add on with protective case, and offers excellent value for money and sound quality was wonderful, I think you must have one as your iPod dock.
